IGLP Fellows Reading Group

May 16, 2018

Throughout the Spring semester 2018, the Fellows and Visiting scholars at IGLP, together with SJDs and LLMs, have met on a monthly basis to better explore and question the foundational ideas and imaginaries of public international law. For each session, a brief excerpt from classics is juxtaposed to more recent scholarly research, either echoing or challenging the set of ideas and assumptions often taken for granted. What were people like Carl Schmitt or Hans Kelsen envisioning and why? Where did they get those ideas? What they were trying to do with them? With the contribution of David Kennedy – and his inspiring insight of thinking of the discipline as of “people with projects”, the group engages with more critical and nuanced questions about the way international law has been imagined, created, and operated, both academically and professionally.
