Austin Inequality Idea Lab

March 30, 2018 - March 31, 2018

People in Austin, Texas are gathering to discuss ideas to reduce inequality at Workshop Austin Inequality Idea Lab March 30-31, 2018/ Austin, TX

On March 29th-31st, together with Northeastern University Law School Program on the Corporation, Law and Global Society, IGLP has proudly co-sponsored An Idea Lab, hosted and organised by the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice of the University of Texas at Austin. The Idea Lab is a way to stimulate the emergence of a community around a common question. Prior to the Idea Lab, the researchers shared and read key texts they believe should inform the discussion of the chosen question. At the meeting, participants identified opportunities for research, flagged areas of difficulty and potential disagreement, and discussed possible areas of synergy across substantive and methodological divides. The result was a sort of research ecosystem, in which different participants filled different niches, and informed each other’s projects. The three-days-long workshop brought together scholars from different disciplines to question the role of law in the production of inequality. Although it is commonly said that inequality is structural – and not an accident – the contribution of law to the structural production of distributional inequities is not well understood.
