Panel Discussion on Collateral Knowledge: Legal Reasoning in the Global Financial Markets

September 15, 2011

On September 15th at 5:30 PM in Pound 200, the IGLP and the Tobin Project will co-host Cornell University Professor Annelise Riles for a discussion of her new book, Collateral Knowledge: Legal Reasoning in the Global Financial Markets.

In the book, Professor Riles explores the uses of collateral in the financial markets as a regulatory device for stabilizing market transactions.  How collateral operates, Riles suggests, is paradigmatic of a class of low-profile, mundane, but indispensable activities and practices that are all too often ignored as we think about how markets should work and be governed.  Riles seeks to democratize our understanding of legal techniques, and demonstrate how these day-to-day private actions can be reformed to produce more effective forms of market regulation.

Professor Peter Spiegler from the Department of Economics at UMass Boston will serve as the discussant for this event.  Professor Riles is the Jack G. Clarke Professor of Law in Far East Legal Studies and Professor of Anthropology at Cornell, where she also serves as Director of the Clarke Program in East Asian Law and Culture.  Her work focuses on the transnational dimensions of laws, markets and culture.
