From the Household to the Family: Legal Genealogies

February 23, 2012

Janet Halley, IGLP contributor and Royall Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, published the second installment of “What is Family Law?: A Genealogy,”  in the Yale Journal of Law & the Humanities.  The work offers a genealogy of domestic relations law (later renamed family law) and how it emerged as a distinct field in American law in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

To celebrate the occassion, the IGLP hosted a panel discussion in honor of Professor Halley on February 23, 2012 at Harvard Law School.  The event featured panel discussions about the significance of the article and its relationship to other pieces in the field. Panelists also reflected on the influence Professor Halley’s overall scholarship has had on their own research and how it has shaped their own thinking.
