IGLP affiliated-scholar Namita Wahi is excited to announce the recently published OpEd piece in the New Indian Express titled “Compromise Over Land Takeover”.

Highlights:

Land acquisition is inevitably a controversial issue in nations with land scarcity which are trying to achieve rapid economic development through greater industrialisation. India is no exception. 

The Land Acquisition Bill passed by both houses of Parliament awaits presidential nod before it becomes law and replaces the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. Clearly, in a nod to the rightsification of our discourse, the government has changed the title from the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill to the much longer Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill.   

The Bill passed in Parliament is a compromise between various conflicting interests.
