On Monday, November 17, 2014 the Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard will be co-sponsoring a talk on Lawyers for Power or Powerful Lawyers?: The Role and Functioning of the European Commission’s Legal Service Today.  The speaker for the event will be Margarida Afonso, Fellow, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs; Member of the Legal Service, European Commission. Ms. Afonso’s lecture will take place from 12:15 PM – 2:00 PM in the Cabot Room at Busch Hall.

Ms. Afonso will explore the idea that despite the fact that the role of the legal experts in international or supranational organizations is often unknown, they can still play a key role, for both the efficiency of the organization and for the capacity of delivering policies. This general assessment is particularly true in the case of the European Union and the European Commission for being the most powerful supranational executive body in the world. through her lecture she will seek to explain what is the Legal Service of the European Union, what are its specific and unique tasks and what role does it play within the European Commission and the overall machinery of the European Union.
